Random Thoughts On GaryCon 2022

 GaryCon 2022... the MASKED YEARS

Merchant room Location:

The Merchant room is located at the Forums - Far removed from most gaming... all Sellers seem to be listed in one large area. So, if you have a game that is not in the area, you will be hoofing it to the forums or not... I think traffic will be diminished as not people have to go out of their way to get there or forgo playing in a game. There will not be the stop in if you have an hour between games, especially since you will not be eating at the gaming tables.

Next time I run games, this is the section I want to be located, not too many tables, and near the merchant area. That is so long as they have a Spotted cow station in the Forum Lobby

FOOD:

While on the subject of food and drink...

"Limited eating a small snack and drinking at gaming tables may be allowed as long as you mask up when not actively eating or drinking.  This means take a bite or a drink and remask immediately.  It is not meant to allow someone to have an open beverage or snack and remain unmasked for an extended time."

Not sure how they will enforce this, but I think people should stock up on protein bars of their choice just to be safe and plan on Mealtimes accordingly... Straws and small self-contained nutrients like trail mixes and M&Ms/ Skittles will probably work best. I would advocate LOLLYPOPS, but that depends on enforcements, and I would not want anyone to be asked to leave.

NOISE LEVELS

Having played games in Nearly every Gaming space in the Grand Geneva, I can attest to the noise levels.

Evergreens   - the worse place to play games

WestGate  - because there are only 3 tables at most, these are the best for noise

By removing the Forums from gaming space and giving the Ballroom to the adventurer's league, this has assured that most games will be played in the loudest possible conditions.  Add in that everyone will be wearing a mask and you increased your noise by 40%

I have never had a less than positive game in the forums other than food issues and a long walk to refill the Spotted Cow cup...

Quick look at the Events

AD&D (1st Edition)    58 Events

AD&D (2nd Edition)     8 Events

D&D 1st Edition - 9 Events

D&D Basic  - 13

D&D Original   30

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adventurers League                     222 Events

D&D 5th edition -                           167 Events

Pathfinder Society                         45 Events

OK, so I knew that the Old school players were getting pushed aside and for the past few years the Convention has been changing. There are a lot of other games Like DCC (110 events) and C&C (33 Events) and handful of others but for a Con about the Legacy of Gary Gygax...

So I was looking for events that I would consider "In Demand" or even ones that I would even want to play in and to be honest, not much is making me excited.

Sure, there are 3 games I aim to play in at every GaryCon (But I am not telling what they are)

I would be playing in several RPEX sessions and 2-3 games

My current plan is to reserve the right to attend up until the day of the con... selecting games, doing what I would do if attending.

And This Gem - The gift that keeps on giving

But everyone there has been vaccinated or tested negative in the 72 hours before their arrival

The following statements have been cited from the following website Updated Aug. 5, 2021

"Tests have found traces of COVID-19 on surfaces, but no research has established that the virus is viable in those places."

Wearing gloves isn't necessary

There are no studies that show disposable gloves increase protection against COVID-19. The virus won’t infect you through your well-moisturized hands, and remember, surface contact is not a primary source of COVID-19 transmission. If you do infect yourself, it would be from touching your face – with or without gloves.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respiratory transmission is still the primary concern. “It is possible for people to be infected through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects (fomites), but the risk is generally considered to be low,” the agency says.
